Custom Pages - 401, 404, etc.

If you need a custom 404 page, a permanent redirect, a custom 401 page or a custom name for your index page, you can let us know and we will adjust your configuration to meet your needs.

Custom 404 - "Not Found"

When someone types in the address of a page and that page no longer exists, the visitor's web browser will deliver it's standard 404 "Not Found" error. If you would like a special page to come up when a 404 error occurs, you have three choices. You can create a custom page that stands alone. You can use our 301 redirect system described below with its standard unformated message. Or you can create a custom page that is used with the 301 system described below.

To create a stand alone custom 404 page, just make the page and send the URL of that page to support. We will set up the pointers so that instead of the visitor's web browser delivering its standard message, we will deliver the special page you want the visitor to see.

If you plan to create a custom 404 page and use it with the 301 system described below, the page must be named 404.html and it must be placed in your /data folder.

Custom 301 - "Moved Permanently"

If you have a need for a permanent redirect to a new page, we can set up a custom 301 redirect, "Moved Permanently," system for you so you can manage any errors. For example if you had a page named bags.htm that is well placed on search engines but you rebuilt your site with PHP and the page is now called bags.php, you can set up a redirect so traffic to the old URL is redirected to the new one. First, send a request to support and we will turn on the ability for you to manage these kinds of redirects. Secondly, make a tab delimited file in your www/data folder called 404.data with a list of old and new URLs as shown below. You can optionally include on the first line, the email address where 404 errors will be sent if the missing page is not in your list:
webmaster@yourdomain.com
/oldurl.html http://www.yourdomain.com/newurl.html
/oldurl-2.html http://www.yourdomain.com/newurl-2.html
A standard, unformatted 404 error text message will be displayed in case the missing URL is not in the list. If you include an email address as shown above, the message will have a submit button on it so the visitor can send the error to you. If you would like the 404 page to have a custom design, create a template with <!-- error --> where you want the error information and submit button to show up. The template must be named 404.html and it must be placed in your /data folder. You must also use a full URL to images and links.

Custom 401 - "Unauthorized"

The 401 error "Unauthorized" occurs when a visitor logs on incorectly to a password protected section of your web site that requires a valid user ID and password. A 401 error means that your user ID and / or password were invalid for whatever reason (entered incorrectly, user ID suspended etc.). If you would like a special page to come up when a 401 error occurs, just make the page and send support the URL of that page. We will set up your configuration so that instead of delivering its standard message, it delivers the special page you want the visitor to see.

Custom Index Page

If you need a custom name for your index page, please send support the name of the page you need. Normally, we recognize index.html and index.htm.
